Saying goodbye is never easy and in many funeral services, families look for gentle and symbolic ways to say farewell. Balloon releases were once a common choice, but these days they are now widely discouraged due to environmental concerns—and in some states of Australia, they are restricted or not permitted at all under littering and environmental protection laws.
In New South Wales, Western Australia, Queensland and Victoria releasing balloons into the air is prohibited under environmental regulations, reflecting growing efforts to reduce harm to our wildlife and waterways. Other states, also have rules or restrictions around mass balloon releases, especially at public events and funerals/ceremonies.
Because of this, many families now choose calmer, quieter, more sustainable and thoughtful alternatives during funeral services. Lighting candles can create a peaceful moment of reflection, the flame flickering representing love and connection. Standing together and sharing memories, reading letters, or playing a loved one’s favourite song while placing a flower on top of their coffin also gives family and friends a moment to stand with their loved one and reflect on the memories that they had together. Some also choose symbolic gestures of scattering petals, writing messages and drawing on their loved ones coffin or it could be as simple as just a moment of silence.
An alternative to a balloon release is a dove release, this is another gentle but powerful way to represent their loved one’s soul’s journey onward, bringing peace and love to their family and friends.
There are a number of alternatives that offer the same sense of meaning and release, without harming the environment. In their simplicity, they often feel even more personal and meaningful, there is comfort and a soft reminder to honour a life, and gently say goodbye.
