SHEEKEY Yvonne Marie

Obituary

Yvonne Marie Sheekey, born 24th October 1944 to parents George Cowie and Mary ‘Bernie’ Cowie. Her first house was Kempt St, Mortlake. Yvonne was the eldest of 7 children, joined by Dianne, Kevin, Philip, Moira, James and Chris. She married Edward ‘Ted’ Sheekey 29th January 1966 at St Catherine’s in Gymea, with the reception held at the family home on Sylvania Rd. Survived by her children David, Anne, Glen, Karen, Monica and Julie, and Grandkids Priscilla, Brent, Jake, Tahlia, Elise, Catherine, Sophie, Taylor, Madison, Levi, Sophie and Alec, along with great grandkids Harvey, Halle and Dusty. Yvonne, or Von or Vonnie, as she was often known by friends and family, was a strong and independent woman, becoming a widow at 35, she assumed the role of mother and father, caring for her 6 children. She was dedicated to ensuring her children were raised in the catholic faith, from which she drew so much comfort. Most weekends were spent visiting either the Sheekey or Cowie families, helping foster beautiful family connections that continue to this day. She sewed clothes, took kids to regular sport and on annual camping adventures down to Gerringong. Despite the heavy burden of her own responsibilities, she generously gave her time to those around her. Making time for friends, playing squash, regular walking, line dancing, blood donations and volunteering at the local church. She was much loved and admired by family and friends with whom she shared her many talents, including her famous Pavlova’s, Pumpkin Pies, Eclairs and home-made Baileys. Yvonne instilled in her children a strong sense of caring for others through her own examples of giving, she was proud of her family. In her later years, she moved up to Caves Beach to be close to her son Glen, his wife Alison and their children, enjoying Tai Chi and Mahjong. May she now rest in Peace"
